iTheatre has an original new play opening next month specially for the Year of the Rooster!

From 27 April to 14 May, come and meet three famous feathered friends – the stars of three classic tales:

  • The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs, and her greedy owner;
  • The Little Red Hen, with bread to bake, but lazy friends; and
  • Chicken-Licken – with that scary acorn!

This talkative trio of feathered friends will sing, dance, show and tell you their tales. And don’t be surprised if they share some valuable wisdom and backstage secrets on the way.

A brand new, interactive, musical production presented in quite an unusual way – iTheatre will bring the audience into the world of the Theatre Stage from the inside out. The wild and wacky characters and well-known folk tales are presented in fun ways that help us to understand both the themes and morals, but along the way we also reveal valuable secrets of how a Musical is made!

“O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?”

Now, even if you’ve never read a single Shakespeare play in your life, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard that line and know where it comes from. It’s one of the best known lines from the famous Romeo & Juliet!

Or if you are from my generation, at the very least you would have flocked to the theatres to watch Leonardo DiCaprio play Romeo in the movie version of Romeo & Juliet.

This April, we are in for a real treat by the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT). As part of their Shakespeare in the Park series, SRT will be staging Romeo & Juliet from 27 April to 22 May 2016. This will be their ninth production of Shakespeare in the Park, and 2016 is an extra special year because this year marks the 400th death anniversary of William Shakespeare. To join in on the celebrations commemorating the bard’s life and works, SRT has chosen to stage what is probably Shakespeare’s most well-loved play, one which has had a profound influence on popular culture.

Main Visual (with text)

I love the Shakespeare in the Park series! A picnic with friends and loved ones, lush greenery, and a good performance of the classics. What’s not to love?

SRT’s production of Romeo & Juliet will be a contemporary take on the classic, and if Merchant of Venice was anything to go by, it will be a visually stunning production. The young lovers will be portrayed by Thomas Pang (Tribes) and Cheryl Tan (Beauty World and Red Riding Hood), with Remesh Panicker, Shane Mardjuki and Daniel Jenkins in other leading roles.

Remesh Panicker!! I’m so excited to watch him act, you have no idea. I loved his portrayal of Shylock in Merchant of Venice, and am very keen to see which role he takes up and how he interprets the role.

If you read in the Straits Times, there’s a chance that this might be the last Shakespeare in the Park (sob!). If you’ve never been, you really should go down this year to experience the event for yourself.

I first saw posters of Hanuman – The Superhero Monkey hanging from lamp posts along the roads. Superhero monkey? What was this all about?

When I found out that the show was based loosely on the epic Indian tale, the Ramayana, that piqued my interest. An epic tale, a superhero, and promises of battles. I figured this would be something the kids would be interested in – and they were!

Hanuman is a monkey who had superpowers when he was young but he lost his powers after using them foolishly to play tricks on others (I thought that was a good reminder to the children to not waste their skills and talents on foolish things!). One day Rama looks him up and sends him on a mission to rescue Rama’s wife, Sita, who was abducted by the evil Ravana. Hanuman assembles some friends and forms an army of monkeys who set out to defeat Ravana. Along the way, he rediscovers his superpowers after learning to believe in himself.

This production was unlike any other that I’ve seen from SRT’s The Little Company. It uses multimedia to wonderful effect! While the stage set at first appears plain, just white canvases on movable frames, the white screens provided the backdrop for all kinds of scenes to be projected onto them. One minute the monkeys are in a jungle, then they are soaring through the sky, and then (my favourite part) they are walking in a labyrinth of walls and one of the characters even gets sw……!

Wait, what was that?

Sorry! I don’t want to spoil this part! You got to watch it to see for yourself!

I loved how the images were stylised to look like comics, and there were text bubbles popping up every now and then to provide the context, just like in a comic book. The result is that you feel like you are reading a Harry Potter book where the characters are moving on the page!

Hanuman – The Superhero Monkey is a collaboration between SRT and UK’s Imitating the Dog, who bring their unique style of theatre to this epic tale adapted from the Ramayana. The production also features music by Soumik Datta, one of the biggest new music talents in UK. I loved how the sitar was featured heavily in the music, and it felt very on point.

While this isn’t a musical extravaganza with songs aplenty like Treasure Island, The Nightingale, Three Billy Goats Gruff and other recent SRT productions, the show is definitely the multi-sensory experience that it promises to be, and you’ll be entertained for sure.

And anyway, when we left my boys were still singing the Superhero Monkey song :)

And also, my little almost-two-year-old girl told me after, “Mummy, I’m a flying monkey!”

So yes, boys and girls alike will enjoy this show! You can get your tickets from the SISTIC website or call the SISTIC hotline (63485555).

***GIVEAWAY***

SRT has very generously sponsored one Family Package (4 tickets) for 17 Apr 2016, Sun, 11am to one reader! All you have to do is to leave a comment below telling me one superpower you wish you had, and what you would do with that power!

This is a flash giveaway, so all entries need to be in by 12pm, 15 Apr! Please make sure that you can make it for that showtime before taking part as the tickets cannot be exchanged for other shows.

Thanks!

Boys clothes can be so boring sometimes, basically just T-shirts and shorts for the most part. You can have a few types of tops (button downs, jerseys, polo tees), and you can have a few types of bottoms (berms, jeans) but it’s all basically the same thing. So I’m always on the lookout for interesting T-shirts for the boys in the hope of spicing things up a bit for them.

When I heard about the Tangram Tee by fabricate.sg I was immediately intrigued by the concept, and was keen to let the kids try the T-shirts.

SONY DSC

The Tangram Tee takes the classic tangram game and uses it to turn a plain T-shirt into a T-shirt with endless design possibilities. Tangrams are puzzles made up of seven shapes that you can combine in any way to make all kinds of shapes and patterns. There are over 6,500 patterns documented to date – that’s more than 17 years of unique T-shirt designs if you wore the Tangram Tee every day! Fabricate.sg also sells alphabet and number packs which make things even more fun. Not only can the kids customise the picture, they can add captions!

Each Tangram Tee comes with a set of tangram shapes and a starter guide for a few designs to try out

The T-shirt is made of good quality cotton that has a nice weight to it, yet it’s not too thick. The front of the T-shirts have felt strips, and the tangram shapes are made of velcro on one side which sticks easily to the strips. As long as most of the shape is stuck to the strips they will stick on very securely. You really have to rip it off when changing a design. In fact, the shapes and alphabets stick so tightly to each other that it was quite challenging to look for alphabets because everything was stuck together. In the end I found an old piece of felt that came from a show Asher watched as a toddler. That lily pad was perfect for arranging all the alphabets, shapes and numbers and made it much easier for them to find the alphabets they needed.

We broke out the T-shirts for Children’s Day and the boys both independently decided they wanted to have dragon designs (they are really into the How to Train Your Dragon series now). Asher was very pleased to have a unique T-shirt with his favourite Monsterous Nightmare dragon and couldn’t wait to show his friends in school. Ellery too was happy to trot off to school with a dragon on his shirt. It was interesting to see that already in this example, they both came up with different styles of dragons even though they used the same seven shapes.

The Tangram Tee is suitable for girls too of course, and Alyssa had a chance to put hers on when we went to watch Treasure Island (though it’s more like a dress for her at the moment :) ). The kids were again really happy to have their T-shirts follow the theme.

With Christmas just around the corner, I think they’ll be wanting to do a Christmas themed design too!

I can see the Tangram Tee being a very good travel companion. The kids can make designs on each other’s shirt while waiting for the plane or bus. It’s also great for when you want to dress the kids in matchy-matchy clothes. You can either match the designs exactly, or go for a theme to tie all their designs together!

It also makes a really good gift this Christmas! If you are like me and still haven’t finished your Christmas shopping, why not get some Tangram Tees for the kids on your list? Each T-shirt is $29 and comes with a set of tangram shapes. The T-shirts come in four colours – white, pink, blue and yellow.

**Coupon Code**

If you are getting some Tangram Tees, use the coupon code “SECRET12” when shopping at fabricate.sg and you will be eligible for a free pack of Two Dozen Letters.

Fabricate.sg has also generously sponsored 3 sets of Tangram Tees to be given away to three readers. Besides the tangram shapes that comes with every Tangram Tee, fabricate.sg is throwing in a pack of alphabets (and numbers) too! Each of these sets is worth $37, and will be lots of fun for your kids!

Ahoy there! Somethin’ excitin’ is comin’ o’er yer way come the end of October! Better be on the lookout for it, me hearties!

Singapore Repertory Theatre’s (SRT) The Little Company (TLC) will be staging the exciting and swashbuckling story of Treasure Island from 30 Oct 2015 at the DBS Arts Centre.

A new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s popular novel of the same name, Treasure Island follows the adventure of Jim Hawkins, who receives a treasure map from a kooky old seaman. Jim is tasked to help find the hidden treasure, but the road to riches is never smooth sailing. In this version of the Treasure Island, Jim Hawkins is cast as a lion-hearted 13-year-old girl rather than a boy, possibly to appeal to the girls, though I think the story itself should be compelling enough.

Look out for other colourful characters like Captain Smollett, Squire Trelawney, and of course, Long John Silver!

Treasure Island promises to be a hilarious and action-packed musical about friendship and trust, and is suitable for the whole family! It’s a great way to welcome the year-end holidays, and reward the kids for working so hard throughout the school year.

My boys have read Treasure Island the book and really enjoy the story. So much so that when Ellery saw a children’s illustrated version of the book at the Book Swop at the recent Octoburst Festival, he exchanged a book for it even though we already have the longer version at home.

We sure are looking forward to joining those buccaneers on an adventure to find gold! Argghh!!

Treasure Island is being staged from 30 Oct – 13 Dec, 2015 at the DBS Arts Centre.
Tickets are available through the SISTIC website or via their hotline (6348 5555).

***Giveaway***

SRT has generously sponsored 1 Family Package (4 tickets) worth $153 for Treasure Island on 7 November, 11am, to be given away to one lucky reader! There were some books I remember reading over and over again as a kid, and my two small books containing a selection of Aesop’s Fables were definitely among them. There are about 665 fables in total, dating back 2,600 years. I haven’t read them all, but am well acquainted with the more popular stories.

I think my mum gave away those books, but we now still have two thin copies of Aesop’s Fables in our house. These were Jon’s copies from when he was younger and my late mother-in-law kept them, along with some other books, specially for her future grandkids! She would be very happy to know the books have been read repeatedly by the boys.

If you love Aesop’s stories too, you should check out iTheatre’s performance of Aesop’s Fables from 26 Feb to 21 Mar. They show and tell a selection of Aesop’s most famous stories, along with some lesser known ones, using puppetry, live action and song. The selection will include “The Jay and The Peacock”, “Androcles and The Lion”, “The Lion and The Mouse”, and “The Goose that Laid The Golden Eggs”.

AEF015 landscape

Their 2009 production of Aesop’s Fables played to sold-out audiences, so be sure not to miss it this time around. We really enjoyed iTheatre’s last show, Hop & Honk, and I hope that they’ll put on a good performance again!

Tickets are available from SISTIC.

*** Giveaway ***

iTheatre has kindly sponsored 2 sets of 2 tickets to Aesop’s Fables on Saturday, 7th March 2015 (2.30pm). If you need more than 2 tickets, iTheatre has offered to sell adjacent seats at a discounted rate to the winners.

To qualify for the giveaway, please do these 2 things by 2 Mar 2359hrs (not a lot of time, so don’t put it off till later!):
1. Leave a comment below on which of Aesop’s Fables is your favourite and why
2. Share this Facebook post with at least one other person.

Don’t forget to leave me your email address so I can contact you if you win!

The winning entries will be selected at random from all qualifying entries. The winners will be announced here in the comments section of this post, and will be contacted via email.  They will have 24 hours to respond, failing which another winner will be selected. Tickets will be available for collection on the day itself at the performance venue 30 minutes before showtime.

Ever since our successful outing to watch a performance in Mandarin last year, I’ve been on the lookout for other Mandarin shows, especially those with familiar story lines. The upcoming production of Goldilocks and the Three Bears by the Singapore Repertory Theatre’s The Little Company (TLC) fits the bill. TLC is lauching its 2015 season with a Mandarin version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears which was first staged in English in 2013 to sell-out houses.

CHIgoldilocks_A3_301014

Like the English version, the Mandarin production will feature music and lyrics by the Laurence Olivier award-winning West-End musical theatre songwriting duo George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. We watched the English version and I remember the boys liking the porridge song very much, so I’m really looking forward to hearing that sung in Mandarin.

This is a classic story that teaches young children not to fiddle with the belongings of others, lest there be consequences to bear. If you loved the English version, don’t miss the chance to join the cast as they bring your child on an exciting Mandarin journey!

SRT has kindly sponsored 2 tickets to be given away to one reader for Goldilicks and the Three Bears in Mandarin on Sunday, 15 Mar, 11am.

To qualify, simply leave a comment below by 12 Feb (Thu), 6pm stating what would upset you most – having your porridge eaten, your chair broken, or your bed slept in – and why! Don’t forget to leave me your email address so I can contact you if you win.

We are fans of the annual KidsFest! and have caught more than a few productions since it started in 2012. Kidsfest! prides itself on bringing in world-class theatre for young people. In the past few years they have brought in high quality stage adaptations of famous children’s stories, and this year’s offerings include the ever popular Gruffalo, The Snail and the Whale, and The Tiger Who Came to Tea. There are also five new shows for the 2015 season – Vile Victorians, Barmy Britain (Part 2), Hugless Douglas, The Princess and the Pea, and Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo.

Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo is a particularly interesting offering this year as it is not based on a familiar children’s book. It is a unique performance that allows dinosaur-crazed children to get upclose and personal with an amazing array of creatures from bygone eras, from cute baby dinos to some of the largest carnivores and herbivores that have ever walked the planet! Children will be able to experience these creatures ‘live’ on stage. Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo promises to be a fun and educational performance where children can learn how to feed and interact with Erth’s dinosaurs, and connect with the real science of palaeontology.

What did he come here for?

Well, let me tell you!

Brought in by ABA Productions, Hairy Maclary and Friends will make for a perfect family treat suitable for those from 2 to 102. You’d be barking mad to miss it!

Becoming a mother introduces you to the world of baby slings and carriers. I’ve tried my fair share of them – the ring sling, the pouch, and a few types of structured carriers. It’s so important to find the right carrier as it really can make or break your day…and your back. Besides the essentials like diapers, the carrier/sling is the most important item I bring for each outing.

When I discovered I was pregnant with no. 3, I knew I had to find a way to carry baby comfortably while still having both hands free to hold onto the older boys’ hands when crossing the road. Having free hands was especially crucial as I pick the boys after school by myself everyday, and the carpark is big with everything from motorcycles to coaches going by frequently.

I knew I wanted something close to a sling style carrier as I like how cosy slings are for young babies with the cloth wrapped snugly around them, but I hoped for something that could give the double-shouldered support of structured carriers.

I drew up a list of requirements for my ideal carrier:
1 Comfortable and cosy for baby
2. Comfortable for me
3. Easy to use
4. Hands free

In the course of my research I stumbled upon the award-winning Baby K’tan and I was really excited because it seemed to fit the bill.

Awards Collage (updated)

(Updated Mar 2015: Baby K’Tan won another award this year)

I was given the opportunity to review the Baby K’Tan Breeze, and after 3 months of use I can say that it definitely meets all my criteria! Here’s the low down on the Baby K’Tan sling, and the Breeze model in particular.

About the Baby K’Tan Breeze

The Baby K’tan carrier comes as two loops of fabric joined by a smaller loop of cloth. There’s also an extra safety sash to use for certain carrying positions. It’s a simple yet clever design, functioning as a cross between a sling, a wrap and a carrier. It is as light as a sling but you can carry baby in more positions, as cosy as a wrap but without all the fussy extra cloth dangling everywhere, and as comfortable as a structured carrier but without the bulk.

getting started

The basic structure of the Baby K’Tan

The Baby K’Tan Breeze is similar in every way to the original Baby K’Tan except that instead of being made entirely of cotton, each loop is half mesh, half cotton. I chose the Breeze in white to reflect heat since my aim was to have a carrier that was as cooling as possible.

Comfortable and Cosy for Baby

The Baby K’Tan Breeze is ideal for use in Singapore with our hot and humid climate (for those of you not from here, the temperature is around 28°C on average, going as high as 34°C on hot days, and our relative humidity is upwards of 80% on average, sometimes hitting 100% during the rainy season). We also have the problem of very cold shopping malls that over-compensate for the hot weather.

The Breeze gives me the flexibility to adjust the wrapping material depending on the weather and where I am. Outdoors I adjust the loops such that two layers of mesh wrap baby. On a cooler day, I use one layer of mesh and one layer of cotton. At shopping malls and supermarkets, I use two layers of cotton over baby to keep her warm and snug.

the cotton side

the cotton side

the mesh side - thin and cooling, but strong

the mesh side – thin and cooling, but strong

There are no buckles or rings that get in the way, so the only thing that touches baby’s skin is the soft wrapping of the sling. I have many curious passersby asking me about the Baby K’Tan and gushing about how great the mesh fabric is. The most common comment I get when I wear baby is, “Wow! That looks really comfortable for baby!”

Comfortable for Me

That comment is usually followed by, “And it looks so comfortable for you too!”

This is so important. I used to be an avid user of the ring sling. But for all the things I liked about ring slings (it’s lightweight, folds small so its easy to put in the diaper bag, comfortable for baby), the key flaw was that the entire weight of baby was bourne on one shoulder. That resulted in poor posture and back aches. I liked how structured carriers distribute the weight across both shoulders, but it was bulkier and less cosy for newborns.

Baby K’Tan is like a dream come true in this area. You enjoy all the benefits of the sling, plus you get the comfort of even weight distribution across both shoulders! How great is that?

Easy to Use

Putting on the Baby K’tan is as easy as putting on a T-shirt. Just put the loops over your head like a necklace, put one arm through each loop, and you’re basically ready to put baby in.

Having used ring slings a lot previously, I can tell you that using the Baby K’Tan is a piece of cake. I know many people like the cosiness of slings but shy away from using a ring sling because of the difficulty they have in adjusting the cloth. As for baby wraps, even fans of it move to other carriers because there’s just so much cloth it becomes too hot for baby in our weather. It’s also a bit yucky that the ends touch the ground, especially on rainy days.

With the K’Tan’s two loops, all these problems go away. You don’t need to adjust the length of the cloth, and there isn’t an endless amount of cloth to deal with. The extra sash used for certain carrying positions is not that long, and when not in use it folds into a bag to store the carrier (nifty eh), and is small enough to stuff into your handbag.

The Baby K’Tan stretches out a bit after some use, but like a pair of jeans, it shrinks back to size after throwing it in the washing machine! It’s also dryer safe so you can have it washed and ready for use very quickly.

There are a variety of carrying positions, and most require little (if any) practice at all. My favourite is the ‘hug’ position that I used from when baby was a month old (see this video for instructions to adapt this position for a newborn). Now that Alyssa is more aware and wants to look out I’ve been using the ‘explore’ position too. I’ve also tried the outward facing ‘adventure’ position which, unlike other outward facing carriers, provides a seat for baby rather than dangling her from her crotch.

She sleeps very soundly in the 'hug' position.

Hands Free

I can firmly attest to this. I find the Baby K’Tan Breeze wraps baby tightly to my body and provides enough head support for me to walk without needing to give baby extra support. This completely frees me to hold the hands of my two older boys when crossing the road or walking in the carpark. In fact, at the end of each week when the kids bring home their sleeping stuff from school, I carry baby, my diaper bag, two large duffel bags with their pillows, bedsheets and blankets, and still hold onto my boys’ hands. No sweat.

Downsides

The main downside about the Baby K’Tan is that you have to make sure you get the right size since the cloth comes pre-looped. It needs to be snug enough so that baby is held close to you when carried.

[Updated Mar 2015]
Baby K’tan used to only show US sizes in their sizing chart. When I bought my first Baby K’tan carrier I mistakenly thought they were in UK sizes and bought the wrong size. Baby K’tan has since updated their sizing chart to show both US and international sizing.

Sizing - International

As the sizing matters, you may not be able to share the Baby K’Tan with your partner if he is a lot larger than you. This isn’t really a problem for me as I have always been the one to sling the kids if they have to be carried for a longer time.

The other downside I found is that it’s a little hard for me to position baby to breastfeed in this sling. However, that’s just me. I personally know someone who breastfeeds her kid in the K’Tan while walking! What I do is I just take baby out before breastfeeding, No biggie. [Update Oct 2014: I’ve since learned how to position baby to breastfeed her and it’s quite easy. The best positions are to cradle her with her legs sticking out, and in the hug position!]

Verdict

I would highly recommend the Baby K’Tan as it’s comfortable and easy to use, and I’d recommend the Breeze model in particular because it’s perfect for our Singapore weather. It’s a product I wish I had when my older kids were babies as it would have saved me a lot of back aches and shoulder pains.

I had wanted the Baby K’Tan to replace my sling for when baby was small, and move on to my usual structured carrier when she gets heavier. But I might consider using this when the time comes as the K’Tan is comfortable and can carry kids up to about 16kg.
