Growing Steadily

It’s been a good long while since I blogged, in a large part because Alyssa is now much more alert than before. And she’s taken after her eldest sibling in one thing for sure – she hardly naps! There are days she naps for a total of 45 mins! Asher was exactly like that. But thankfully Alyssa cries much less than he did.

So anyway, she’s now 6 months old. I realise I forgot to do an update when she was 5 months, and there’s been a lot of changes since then.

As mentioned in a previous post, she’s able to sit steadily on her own now. She’ll still topple backwards if she gets excited and starts to wave her arms about a lot, but otherwise she can sit and play quite well.

She’s been rolling both to the left and right. And I think she’s gonna be a tummy sleeper like me. We put her to bed on her back but she often flips onto her belly to sleep. According to the experts I don’t really need to worry about her since she’s able to flip anyway.

She’s also started eating, and seems to enjoy her food so far. She’s not got a large appetite, but she accepts most of the food I feed her. So far she’s tried most the usual first foods – brown rice cereal, sweet potato, pumpkin, spinach, carrots, broccoli, etc. She loves carrots and can eat a lot more of that compared with the other vegetables.

Spinach day. She was quite fidgety that day, plus I hadn't yet refreshed my skills at feeding a baby. If you can believe it, more spinach ended up in her belly than on her face :)

When she first started eating rice cereal, Ellery was so excited he kept telling anyone who would listen (including strangers) that his sister could eat rice cereal! Then both he and Asher wanted very much to feed her, so I let them. That was how she started having dinners, instead of just lunches.

And as if it’s the trend for my kids, she’s also not really taken to the bottle, but instead has taken to the cup. She’s now able to drink proficiently from the cup without spilling much, if at all. And she drinks fast! She can gulp down her milk in no time at all from a cup. Weaning her has made her a lot easier for others to take care of her if needed. Like on Saturday, we left her home when we went for Asher’s primary school orientation and she was apparently quite easy to handle. I’m so grateful!

She’s still her happy self, and actually I think even happier. She seldom cries in the car now. Someone suggested putting a mirror in the car for her to look at herself. I was willing to try anything to stop her screaming in the car. I bought a child safe mirror and found that looking at herself did not help, but looking outside did! I angled the mirror such that she could see the outside world even though she’s in the rear facing seat. It’s been much much more peaceful in car rides now. If she does cry it is for a clear reason like she’s tired, or has a poopy diaper. Even then, nowadays when she’s tired she’ll just quietly nod off to sleep. Again, I’m grateful!

She’s certainly been living up to her name and bringing great happiness to those around her. We love her, the boys love her, and it seems she brings a smile to almost every person we walk past. She simply loves when people stop to talk to her and will flash a big big smile at them, causing them to smile, and then she’ll smile even more. A positive cycle. She even smiles at posters! There’s a poster in our building’s lift that shows a lady looking shocked because she got scammed, and Alyssa laughs every time she sees the lady’s shocked look. She must think the lady is playing with her!

Well, I’m curious to see how she continues to grow and develop. I was struck tonight by how small she is compared to her brothers, and compared to us adults. Babies are so small and so cute! I need to treasure her period of babyhood. She’s the last kid, and there ain’t gonna be no more babies until I become a grandma!

This 4th month Alyssa started laughing for real. I still remember that date exactly – 14 Aug – because Asher and I had gone to attend an event together. It was after the event that she suddenly found Asher very funny and kept laughing whenever he brought leaned in towards her.

First laughs!

First laughs!

In the last few days she also started to flip over, usually to her right side, and on two occasions even tried to push up a bit with her left arm. Definitely need to surround her with pillows now when she’s on our bed at night sometimes. Don’t want her to fall off the bed! Both Asher and Ellery fell of the bed as babies *sigh*, with Ellery having the dubious honour of falling off it more than 3 times since birth (he last was when he was almost 3 years old), always head first *SIGH*. Jon and I are hoping it’s not some rite of passage for Nair babies. Hoping it’s a boy thing.

She’s putting on weight, looking chubbier, and has broken the 6kg mark. Haven’t seen the PD yet, but I’m pretty sure he’s still going to tell me she’s gaining weight slowly. But she certainly doesn’t look it. She seems quite tall, and people tend to over-estimate her age.

She’s awake most of the day now. I’m kept very busy with her these days, but I confess I talk to her less than I did with the boys. With Ellery I already found myself talking less with him, with her even less. I find that I get lost in my own thoughts a lot, mostly because once the boys and Jon are around I have to chat with them so much. I like it of course, don’t get me wrong, but I suppose because I’m the kind that needs alone time to recharge, I end up being quiet with her. I have to consciously tell myself to snap out of it. Ironically, she doesn’t help herself by being such a good, generally quiet, little girl.

But she has been crying a lot more this past month. When she gets upset, oh man, she can really cry down the house. There were a couple of weeks where she was extremely sticky and would cry piteously if anyone else tried to carry her. Surprisingly it’s toned down this past week, and I’m hoping it stays that way.

She’s also doing the little girl thing. She can sometimes be quite tneh/tgneh (how in the world do you spell that?) It’s Singlish for (how in the world do you explain it?) trying to get attention by making little girlish whines…I suppose that’s a decent explanation. There were a couple of times I was carrying her, and when I put her down she complained (I don’t know how I should spell that either – “nnnngggggg”?? Singlish is clearly a spoken, not written thing…)

It could also be a girl thing that the toys she likes best are those with faces. Her favourite toy so far is Lionel the Lion that one of my aunts gave Asher when he was a baby. Both Asher and Ellery were cool towards it, but it’s Alyssa best friend. When she’s upset, I just need to get Lionel to talk to her and she’d smile. There was once she seemed to even roar back at him, but I could be imagining things.

She’s become very grabby, and everything she grabs goes in her mouth. She seems to need to chew on something a lot more now – teething? Seems a bit early. But it’s really no fun being her chew toy when I’m breastfeeding her. And when I yelp, she just looks at me and smiles her sweet smile.

Kyle Cheam

This is an overdue post.  Kyle Cheam made his appearance earlier than expected, and just a day after I had met Shan.  Maybe he heard us discussing all the toys in Toys R Us and he was keen to come out and take a look.

We were only able to visit him the next day, and what a dear :)  The parents said everyone will be polite and say that he’s good looking, but I think he really is good looking!

Be good, little Kyle!
